THANKS FOR VIEWING THIS ITEM! From the estate of the late Walter F. Founder of NMGCS (National Milk Glass Collectors Society). Please keep in mind that I, personally, have very little knowledge regarding milk glass.
Through reference books and the internet, I've done, to the best of my limited ability, the identification & description of the item and to note any issues either through extremely close photos and/or in the descriptive portion of this listing. Despite the imperfections, this item looks great and is a wonderful piece as can be seen by the overall pictures. My limited camera skills do not do the item justice in relation to clarity & color. This is a two piece item. I believe the baby is done with a satin finish. The underside of the baby is corrugated for striking matches. The top hat tends to reflect surrounding colors & images in the room - its color is all black and it may be made of some type of glass rather than milk glass but I can't tell.
I do know it's the original hat. Also, there are no grey or yellow areas on the baby as it is all the satiny white color - the lighting situation may make photos appear otherwise. The ridging on the legs are socks. Notice three photos of the baby which are close-ups of either hairlines or of a couple of tiny nicks - there are five hairlines on the base edge two of which can be seen in photo #6 and the lengths are approx.
5/16 The other hairline photo (#7) shows two on the top of the base between the end of an arm and the knee one hairline being approx. 5/16" and the other maybe just a bit over 1/16" - very difficult to measure the areas The third close-up baby photo #8 shows the tiny nicks. Notice two photos of the hat - one of the inside & one of the top.
In both the pics there are reflections of surrounding colors & images in the room, fingerprints, and a bit of dirt around the edges of the inside of the hat. There are also some swirly lines, straight lines, and a few pinpoint dots which I believe to be all part of the process in making the hat but, again, very little knowledge of such things on my part. The inside of the hat photo #9 has a long line on the bottom and some kind of long, wide thing on the side of the hat kind of next to the long line on the bottom. These are only reflections of something in the room. The short lines are what are actually on the bottom of the hat along with some pinpoint dots.
The photo of the top of the hat (#10) has the swirly lines and pinpoint dots. I've included two close-up pics of the areas because I would rather point them out than not - one is photo #11 of a cheek (light mark maybe 3/8" long) and the other is photo #12 near a crease on her dress (light mark maybe 1/8" long - it's the curved line under that small white glare spot from lighting which is basically right in the center of the photo). I can't feel anything, but there is something there. I took many pics of these two areas to try to show them clearly, but the marks are so light they just don't want to show up so I darkened the photos severely to highlight the marks as much as I could - which was not as helpful as I had hoped. I've done the best I can to identify everything with my untrained eyes but there is the possibility that I've not seen tiny or hard to notice lines, smudges, marks, etc. So please ask for more photos of any areas, both of the baby and the hat, that you may be concerned about and I will happily get them to you asap as I have quite a few additional pics of the two pieces of this item.Approximate measurements with baby on the hat: 4 1/2" high -- 5" long.
