This is one of a pair of ceremonial surprise busts made in 1896 by the Legras & Cie Cristallerie St. Denis Paris for the arrival on October 6, 1896 to France in Paris from Russian Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Fédorovna. The murder of the tsarist family by the Bolsheviks occurred on the night of July 16-17, 1918 in Yekaterinburg.

The former Tsar Nicholas II and his family, like the other members of the Romanov family, were murdered not least because the Bolsheviks did not want to leave any potential symbolic figures to the white counter-revolutionaries. The first Romanov to be killed was Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich on June 12, 1918. In the course of the Russian Civil War, other members of the dynasty were eliminated, including Yelisaveta Fyodorovna, the sister of the Tsarina, and five other Romanovs the night following the murder of the Tsar's family. On January 29, 1919, the last four Romanovs in custody were shot. A total of 18 members of the dynasty and many other people from their environment were killed by the Bolsheviks.
